Gestational Diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs to women during their pregnancy. This is because the body produces excess blood glucose during the pregnancy period and this blood glucose level exceeds the normal level which creates an abnormal proportion of blood sugar level.

Protein is one of the main sources for the growth of the body, and it is also very essential for normal diet as well as in diet for diabetes. The main sources of protein can be found in several types of foods.

Recommended food for gestational diabetes diet which contains protein is lean fish, lean skinless chicken meat, fresh eggs, etc. Other sources of protein are yogurt, milk, custards which are found in fresh and natural state. Packaged red meats and other meats should be avoided as they contain added MSGs in them.


During pregnancy iron is also very important as this helps in the production of red blood cells. Iron can be found in several foods like fresh red meats, chicken, egg and fish. For vegetarian patient’s foods which contain iron are spinach, broccoli, brown sugar, dark chocolate, oyster stew, corn syrup, oatmeal, dried apricots, raisins, dried peaches, strawberries and beans. These types of iron-containing foods can be applied in gestational diabetes diet.


Calcium is one of the vital elements that are needed in our body to make the bones strong and also for the proper functioning of the heart, nerves and muscles. Calcium is also effective and important for the curing process of gestational diabetes.

To incorporate calcium into gestational diabetes diet, foods like soy milk, fat reduced cheese, fresh milk and almonds.


A healthy diet should also include fat but not in unnecessary amounts especially saturated fats. Saturated fats can damage the internal part of the body and can also lead to excessive body weight. However, fats from fresh foods do not have harmful effects as such.

Foods like fresh fish especially salmon, lean chicken meat, olive oils, raw nuts and canola which have limited amount of fats is recommended.


Along with these above mentioned gestational diabetes diet, drinking a lot of water with added minerals is advised. Unhealthy habits like staying up late at night, consumption of processed foods, packaged foods, caffeine, foods or snacks with saturated fats and added MSG should be gotten rid of.

Other very useful tip for curing gestational diabetes is dong exercises or workouts every day for at least thirty minutes. Moderates exercises like taking a long walk in the park or jogging can be of great help as it will improve the blood circulation.
