A lot of expecting mothers around the 24th week of pregnancy stand the risk of contracting gestational diabetes diet. It happens to women who’ve never had a history of diabetes and goes away once the baby is born. There is nothing that should worry you as long as you keep your diet in check.

So what is Gestational Diabetes Diet?

Women, during their duration of pregnancy experience high sugar (glucose) levels in their body. This may or may not happen due to the food they consume. More often than not, hormonal changes are to blame. In America alone, about 9.2% woman every year have gestational diabetes.

The placenta that supports the baby’s growth has been known to release certain enzymes that lead of insulin resistance. These enzymes are very essential for the baby’s development inside the womb and therefore the mother has to go through that phase of insulin resistance and requires an external effort to introduce insulin that is up to three times more than what the body can produce.

When your body stops producing or accepting the naturally produced insulin, it stands a chance of being hyperglycaemic. This means there is high glucose in the blood stream that hasn’t been converted into energy.

Does Gestational Diabetes Affect The Kid?

Since this kind of diabetes is contracted later in the pregnancy it does not cause any birth defect. It is different from children who are born to women with diabetes before pregnancy. However, when it gets out of hand it can affect the baby too.

How so?

In gestational diabetes diet the mother’s body produces a lot of insulin but it remains ineffective due to insulin resistance. So now the body has high levels of insulin and blood sugar. This blood sugar or glucose can easily cross over the placenta and enter the womb.

The baby’s body now gets a wrong signal about the presence of high sugar and its pancreas secrete insulin. Now the baby is getting more energy than it needs and this energy gets stored as fat for future use. This causes the baby to be born obese in most cases and can contract type 2 diabetes in their adulthood.

The treatment plan...

The main aim of any treatment for gestational diabetes diet is to get the blood sugar or glucose levels down to that of any other expecting mother who is not suffering from this condition. This requires regular exercise, a diet plan and a series of daily check-ups.

At this point the mother would need constant support from the family and help from doctors or nurses to keep things in check. It is also important to maintain sugar levels because that reduces the risk of getting a caesarean section birth which mostly takes place when the baby is too big to be naturally pushed out by the mother.

You must keep in that stress is your biggest enemy. Once you start stressing about this your body reacts unnaturally and at extremes. With a strong support system, you can overcome this little blip and enjoy a healthy pregnancy.

You can also look at exercising as a good way to keep the diabetes in control. If you are about 20% heavier than your ideal body weight (which is proportionate to your height and age) then you can, only after consulting your doctor, get into a habit of exercising regularly. This gives your body a chance to use up all the extra glucose and prevents insulin resistance.

Earlier expecting women who had gestational diabetes diet went home from the doctors with long lists of what they couldn’t eat, what they had to eat and when they should eat. But that’s not the case now. Diet and nutrition has evolved over the years and made it possible for everyone to lead a healthier life by making minimum changes in their current diet.

At the most now, you will have to cut back on sugar, not avoid it entirely but just watch the amount. You must replace normal carbohydrates with nutritious ones. Consume more wholegrain food items with starch, pulses, fruits and vegetables. Spread your meals across the day by having little portions every time. This gives your body chance to break it all down over a longer period of time making the job easier.

When you maintain a positive, stress free attitude this will all become a cake walk.
