If you are overweight, and have type 2 diabetes, you have probably been advised by your doctor to lose some weight, and to immediately start a low-fat diet. Having a weight problem that is complicated by diabetes will require you to be sure that the diet method you choose is one that you can stick with long-term.
In addition to selecting a diet that offers long-term potential, you must also be sure to research any diet for it's nutritional value. Any diet you choose must provide enough daily nutrition to satisfy your bodies needs. Your diet must not only help you to lose weight, but must also help with the control of your blood glucose level, and help lower your blood fats.
All of your dietary, and nutritional needs must be met, and if not, then you may want to research additional options.
With the abundance of publications on diabetes nutrition that are are available in bookstores, and online, it's no wonder that there is so much confusion around. There is no end to the number of different opinions on exactly what makes a sound diet. However, as a diabetic, you have specific needs that are required for your diet. These needs must be kept in mind when you do your research, and you must be very cautious regarding the following diets:
Your body requires a certain amount of calories to run efficiently. A diet wit little or no fats, will usually cause the dieter to eat more carbohydrates in an effort to make up for the calories needed. And as a diabetic, you know you must pay extra attention to your carbohydrate intake. Eating too many carbohydrates can seriously disrupt your treatment. Research has also proven that it is both needed, and quite healthy for the body to consume certain type of fats.
A diet that promotes a high protein, low carbohydrate intake will very likely not provide the body enough energy. This type of diet can cause many dieters to eat too much meat, and saturated fat. In case you have forgotten, saturated fat is the bad fat and does you no good at all.
Although this type of diet may be healthier than many others, done to the extreme it can be dangerous because your body will actually start to cannibalize itself in an effort to compensate for the needed calories, nutrients, and macronutrients that it is not getting with the low calorie diet. Many people on an extremely low calorie diet will end up looking emaciated, with little or no energy. Ultimately, many people on this type of diet find it too hard to stick to and revert to their normal eating habits. This can result in a rebound effect that will cause the body to rapidly gain extra fat-weight
